Alex Lithgow is an American designer focused on furniture and product design. Born and raised in Manhattan, Alex spends his time between New York City and southern California. His love of design dates back to when he learned technical drawing and drafting as a teen. After attending The New School in Greenwich Village, where he studied Photography (Parsons School of Design) and Cultural Studies (Eugene Lang College), Alex worked in the fields of photography, set and interior design, and product design. He has also studied painting at the Art Students League of New York.
From 1999 to 2006, Alex co-founded and operated Caoba colección de muebles, a furniture design/build business, which produced custom and production pieces in the South Bronx that were offered through his retail shop in TriBeCa, as well as showrooms around the US. The line was known for its high quality, bench-made furniture forms executed in wood, upholstery and glass with a warm, modern aesthetic influenced by Art Deco and Mid-Century design. Since Caoba, Alex has worked in various capacities in the luxury design field, including work as a vintage and antiques buyer.
More recently, Alex served as Head of Design at Dmitriy & Co. During his tenure at Dmitriy & Co. (2015-2020), Alex is credited with having ideated, designed and developed approximately two-thirds of the current collection. This includes the Belgard, Magari and Masson family of forms as well as such designs as the Decca and Bellows sofas, the Arp Chair and the Bandra Ottoman, the latter having received a “Best of Year” award from Interior Design magazine. In 2019 Alex presented his first two pieces under his eponymous brand at the Next Level show in New York City.
Alex’s first collection of forms for Alex Lithgow Ltd. was introduced in May of 2022 at his then newly launched exhibition space, Otras Formas. Spanish for both "other forms" and "other ways,” the name is also a nod to Alex's Latin American ancestry. Located in New York’s Flatiron district, the space functions as a design incubator, gallery and showroom focused on contemporary art and design and presents Alex’s works alongside those of various other artists, makers and designers.
